Spain expels 25 Russian diplomats

Spain has decided to expel about 25 Russian diplomats "with immediate effect" because they pose a threat to its interests, the Foreign Minister announced during a press conference on Tuesday.

"This morning we decided to expel Russian diplomats and employees of the Embassy of the Russian Federation who represent a threat to the country's interests," Jose Manuel Alparis said at the end of the cabinet meeting.

This decision, according to the minister, was due to "the horrific events that took place in the past days in Ukraine in Bucha and Mariupol."

He pointed out that the persons concerned constitute "a group of about 25 people and perhaps an additional person," adding that the Russian ambassador to Spain is not among these diplomats.

Spain followed in the footsteps of France, Germany, Italy and Denmark, which expelled Russian diplomats against the backdrop of the Russian attack on Ukraine, especially after finding many bodies a few days ago in the city of Bucha.
