Entrepreneurs Amancio Ortega buys one of the most iconic buildings in Toronto for 800 million euros: what are his other properties in Canada?
Heirs Marta Ortega: the new president (non-executive) of Inditex was never "Amancio's girl"
The businessman
Amancio Ortega
has a special relationship with
Aragón
.
The latest example of this is an
investment of 245 million
euros in eight wind farms located in the province of Zaragoza.
His company Inditex has in the Aragonese capital
the largest logistics platform
for the distribution of Zara garments to southern Europe.
Almost always when the Amancio Ortega Foundation makes a million-
dollar donation
for health and social issues, such as study scholarships, one of those items arrives in Aragón.
This is the case of the donation of 10 million euros that allowed the acquisition of equipment in the fight against cancer, a total of 48 different cancer devices distributed in all health sectors.
Then it transpired that the businessman had "special interest" so that part of that donation reached
the hospital in Barbastro (Huesca).
And it was learned that the reason was due to the fact that Amancio Ortega
did his military service, in 1958, at the General Ricardos barracks,
in the Barbastro Motorized Hunters Battalion number XVI, as a clerk for the company.

Thanks to this interest, the Barbastro hospital has
a new digital mammography machine,
a work station and a high-performance ultrasound machine charged to the 4.5 million euro provision of the agreement that also benefited the San Jorge Hospital and the Provincial Hospital from Huesca.
For this reason, the
Diario del Alto Aragón
de Huesca published a photo in which
Amancio Ortega appears dressed as a soldier
with three other comrades from the barracks, including Antonio Latorre, who is the one who gave the snapshot.
Heraldo de Aragón
has once again recalled this Monday (April 4) the passage of Amancio Ortega through Barbastro.
Regarding those times in the military, Latorre wrote on social networks: "The coexistence between the chiefs and soldiers, keeping due respect, was one of
great camaraderie,
and I have always maintained
an excellent friendship
with some of them that lasts after of the years. Our most intimate group included a Galician named Amancio Ortega who helped with the administration of the Company,
an excellent person who was very simple and cordial".
And he added: "Today my friend Amancio,
a good soccer player,
fellow shack in the Camp, sandwiches in the
canteen
and singing on the guitar before the retreat, is a business firm of recognized world prestige."
"Loyal, simple and sincere"
Among the
300 soldiers in the barracks,
under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Bernardo Álvarez de Manzano, was, among others, Amancio Ortega, along with many Barbastrenses from the same replacement: Antonio Latorre, José Antonio Fierro, Antonio Olivera.
They are the four that appear in the aforementioned photo.
Latorre remembers him as
"very loyal, simple and sincere.
One more among all, open, cheerful, cordial, always ready to collaborate, very restless, intelligent".
Despite the fact that Amancio Ortega "carries Barbastro in his soul", according to former comrades in the barracks, since he served in the military, as far
as is known, he has not returned to that town in
Huesca, not at least since he acquired public notoriety due to his business successes.
Not even when the City Council, in gratitude for his donation to the hospital, discussed a proposal to extend an invitation to him to
attend the opening of the Fair
and give a speech at the opening on "Development and Business Fabric".
In the justification for the invitation, it was recalled that "Amancio Ortega did his military service in Barbastro in 1958 and from Galicia, his homeland, he moved to Barbastro, where the entire military lived together, and even
his best friends were citizens of Barbastro,
who shared with the barracks and maneuvers. And they, as has been published in the press, define him as
a self-made man
and in these moments of great universal importance ".
