Six dead in California shooting

At least six people were killed and nine others were injured in a shooting in Sacramento, California, early Sunday morning, police said.

"Police have identified at least 15 shooting victims, including six who died," Sacramento police said in a statement on Twitter.

Police had called on people around 4:00 local time (1100 GMT) to avoid the area.

A video posted online showed people fleeing, while gunfire could be heard.

The shooting took place in the downtown area, which is home to many bars and restaurants.

This incident is added to a series of mass shootings in the United States, where firearms were used in 40,000 deaths annually, including suicides.

Gun violence is a widespread problem in the United States, where gun control activists say the widespread availability of guns and relatively lax laws on their possession lead to a recurrence of this type of incident.

Three-quarters of murders in the United States are committed with guns and the number of firearms sold continues to rise.

More than 23 million firearms were sold in 2020, a record number, and 20 million in 2021.

In June 2021, 30 percent of American adults said they owned at least one gun, according to a Pew survey.
