Two boys aged four and eight died on Saturday morning in the fire, probably of accidental origin, of an apartment in Cherbourg and their parents were hospitalized, we learned from the firefighters and the public prosecutor's office. Coutances.

“One of the children was treated in cardio-respiratory arrest.

Despite the resuscitation maneuvers, he was declared dead by the SMUR doctor,” said the Manche Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS 50).

"The second child was found in the apartment, also declared deceased", according to a press release from the SDIS.

The victims

The firefighters intervened around 7:40 a.m. in a one-storey apartment building and five apartments located at the Glacerie in Cherbourg, said the prosecution.

"From the first elements collected, it appears that the fire started in one of the apartments upstairs, occupied by a couple in their thirties and their two boys aged four and eight," said the public prosecutor of Coutances, Mickaël Giraudet, in a press release.

The magistrate confirms that “the two children unfortunately died as a result of this fire while the two parents were injured and hospitalized”.

“They suffer from burns, intoxication and/or traumatic injuries induced by the fall from the first floor,” added the prosecutor.

The other residents of the building were taken care of and relocated.

An accident ?

The magistrate announced that "an investigation into the causes of death" has been entrusted to the Cherbourg police station.

“With all reservations, which the police investigation and a fire expertise will have to lift, it appears that this fire is not of criminal origin, but much more likely of an accidental cause”, underlined the prosecutor.

A little earlier, the firefighters had indicated that nine people were involved, including "four victims, members of the same family and occupants of the apartment on fire: two adults and two children".

"Fifty firefighters and two SMUR", mobile emergency and resuscitation structures, were dispatched to the scene.

The firefighters were "confronted with a violent fire at the level of an apartment in a collective building", underlined the SDIS.

"The roof was totally ablaze when the first means arrived", according to the SDIS which broadcast a photo of the fire, showing the firefighters intervening with a water hose on this building whose roof had caught fire and left s release thick smoke.

Firefighters said the fire was out by 10 a.m.
