Malta's National Theater has canceled a play after public outcry because it portrayed murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in a bad light.

The management of the Teatru Manoel decided unanimously to cancel, as the cultural institution announced on Friday.

The anger arose after the screenplay of the taxpayer-funded play became public.

The performance "ix-Xiha" (the old woman) stars a character named Jenny, who is based on the investigative journalist who was killed by a car bomb in 2017.

The role shows a malicious and vengeful blogger, so the criticism.

At one point, Jenny tells critics that she hopes their children will die of cancer.

Actors and theater directors were shocked by the script and called for a boycott of the national theater across the industry.

According to The Times of Malta, three actors left the theater cast.

The case of the murder of Caruana Galizia is still hanging over the politics of the smallest EU country.

Nine months ago an inquiry found that the Maltese government bore responsibility for the killing because it encourages a "culture of impunity".

In court proceedings over the journalist's death, a man admitted involvement in the murder of the then 53-year-old, while two defendants continue to plead innocent.

In 2017, the blogger researched corruption in connection with a contract for a power plant and connections to the highest level of politics.
