After his slap in the face at the Oscar gala, Hollywood star Will Smith resigns from the Oscar academy.
"I resign from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept all further consequences," the US actor wrote in a statement released by industry publication Variety on Friday.
His behavior at the awards ceremony was "shocking, painful and inexcusable," the Oscar winner wrote.
He hurt a lot of people, including Chris Rock.
Smith smacked Rock onstage at Sunday night's show after the comedian made a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett.
The Oscar Academy said Wednesday after an emergency meeting that disciplinary proceedings would be initiated against the "King Richard" actor.
A possible consequence would have been the exclusion of the actor from the association.
