• A 16-year-old young man was found dead last Thursday on the tracks of the Marseille metro shortly after La Blancarde station.

  • According to the RTM, he practiced “train surfing”, a “game” which consists of “taking” the metro by getting on the hitch and filming his “prowess”.

  • This is the first victim of this kind in Marseille, although several young people have already died in France from such a practice.

A 16-year-old young man was found dead last Thursday on the tracks of the Marseille metro shortly after La Blancarde station,

20 Minutes

learned confirming information from BFMTV Marseille.

According to the RTM, this young man died around 9:15 "after a fall on the tracks while practicing "train surfing"".

This practice consists in “taking”, if one can say, the metro perched on the hitch or suspended from the back, possibly by filming oneself for social networks.

“It is a dramatic and unprecedented event on our network”, underlined the RTM.

"It's something we take very seriously."

Other transport networks have had deaths of this type to deplore, in Paris in particular, where since 2014 similar facts were observed.

The RATP, the Parisian transport authority, then deployed a communication making young people aware of this extremely dangerous practice, as reported by

Le Figaro

On the police side, we remain cautious for the time being on the exact circumstances of the death.

The investigation, entrusted to the urban security brigade, will have to determine with certainty what really happened.

“It will take time.

We will have to find passenger witnesses and use the videotapes.

In recent weeks, several “train surfing” videos made in Marseille have been published on social networks popular with young people, including two of these last three on TikTok.

A phenomenon on which the police remain vigilant, without however observing any recent runaway.

"This problem was much more identified in the Paris region, for example", we comment.

In one of these recent videos, we see two young Marseilles, masked and standing on the train in the aerial section of the metro, throwing themselves flat on their stomachs just before entering a tunnel.

In others, you can see a youngster clinging to the back of the train or even "wedged" between two wagons.

The Marseille metro modernization project, called “Neomma”, which provides for “the installation of platform doors and [de] trains in one piece, will limit the risk of these extremely dangerous practices”, notes the RTM.

The origin of this phenomenon would come from Australia and Russia where, from 2011, young people were filming themselves in similar situations.

That year, nearly 100 people were arrested in Russia for playing this "game" according to

Le Figaro

, citing the Russian press.
