South Africa's president testifies about last year's riots

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will testify at the investigative public hearings of the South African Human Rights Commission on the disturbances that occurred in July 2021 in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces, according to a statement posted on the presidency's website.

And the "Bloomberg" news agency reported that Ramaphosa will appear before the Human Rights Committee to testify.

Last year's riots, which began after former president Jacob Zuma was imprisoned for contempt of court, left more than 350 people dead.

There are claims for insurance damages of more than 20 billion rand, after shops were looted and vandalized during the violence.
