Ukraine Russia cools the negotiation: "There is no progress"
Live Latest News Russia-Ukraine War
Vladimir Putin does not know how
the invasion of Ukraine is going,
and believes that the Russian military situation is better than it really is and that economic sanctions are having a much more modest impact than they are.
This is confirmed by sources in Europe and the United States with access to the internal deliberations of the Russian government.
The Reuters news agency quotes an unidentified senior European official as saying, not without some irony: "Putin believed that things were going better than they really were. That's the problem with surrounding yourself with people who say 'yes. ' to everything, or to sit with them at the end of a very long table".
This lack of knowledge of the real situation is a common problem in dictatorships, where telling the truth to the leader can end your political career (or, if you are unlucky, your life).
One of the clearest examples of this dynamic was
Saddam Hussein
before the invasion of Iraq, when his military leaders lied to him about the chances of victory against the United States and the United Kingdom.
As stated by one of the Reuters sources, "the military high command is afraid to speak", so they have decided
to sacrifice a few thousand Russians and Ukrainians
to maintain their good relationship with the tenant of the Kremlin.
According to the same information, the Russian president did not even know that the Armed Forces had sent replacement soldiers with little training to Ukraine.
