Six years ago, the Norrbotten Region decided to deprive the ambulance in the urban area of Vittangi of its 24-hour staffing.

Since then, it has only been available during office hours.

All other times, the garage has been locked.

This means that the door to the ambulance station in Vittangi has been closed 80 percent of all hours of the year.

The entire eastern Kiruna municipality then lacked access to ambulance care in the immediate area.

This has meant that the residents have had to wait two hours for the ambulance to come from central Kiruna.

Even in acute life-threatening conditions.

A distance of over 200 km that corresponds to the distance between Stockholm and Falun in Dalarna.

In 2018, the Healthcare Party won the regional election in Norrbotten with the promise of better health and medical care for the entire region.

One of the election promises was about the ambulance in Vittangi.

It was not fulfilled - until after Assignment review interview with regional councilor Kenneth Backgård (SJVP).

During the interview, Backgård points out that one should look at the whole.

In fact, Kenneth Backgård mentions the whole no less than 55 times.

He believes that instead of making the ambulance in Vittangi more accessible, they should work to reduce ambulance travel in general.

He gets really annoyed at the questions about the ambulance in Vittangi, but when the interview is over, Kenneth Backgård suddenly turns around and does something very unexpected.

When the cameras are off, he says: "If you want an ambulance, you should get an ambulance".

Then it's 5:53 p.m.

Twelve minutes later, he sends a text message to the Assignment Review Reporter.

The day after the interview, the issue was discussed at the regional board meeting.

Less than a month later, on December 14 last year, the decision was hammered out unanimously.

After six years, the residents of eastern Kiruna municipality got their 24-hour ambulance back in Vittangi.
