A sounding made with the feet.

At the beginning of March, a store in Lille launched a collection of socks bearing the image of several candidates for the presidential election.

A few weeks later, Maxime Lemersre, founder of Chaussettes et compagnie, was delighted with the success of his initiative.

By analyzing his sales, the merchant was able to determine which of the contenders for the supreme office of the state were best placed among his customers.

"After Paul the octopus, there may be the prophecy of the sock," laughs Maxime Lemersre before officially revealing which of the presidential candidates is doing well, at least in terms of the sales of his socks.

By insisting a little, he was nevertheless able to extract the names of the leading trio from him.

“The three who really stand out are Emmanuel Macron, Eric Zemmour, who is still quite high, and Mélenchon who is making a good comeback”, assures the trader.

For him, the notable difference compared to the latest polls is the delay of Marine le Pen, whose sales of socks bearing her image do not reach the 19% with which she is nevertheless credited by the institutes.

Orders from all over France and abroad

Anecdotal will say the worst off.

Not so much after all.

Without revealing the exact figure of his sales, commercial secret obliges, Maxime Lemersre gives us an idea of around a thousand orders on the Web, knowing that an order can include several pairs.

“It's fun to see that the orders came from everywhere, from the smallest village to the very big city.

There are also many from abroad, from countries like Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Greece,” he explains.

So, will this correspond to the votes of the 1st round?

Not sure, especially because some customers did not necessarily buy the pair with the head of their favorite candidate.

"Customers have contacted me to have certain candidates wear the mask, not in memory of this Covid period but symbolically so that they close their mouths", recognizes the trader.

Strangely, Taubira socks are also in high demand when she could not even maintain her candidacy.

Ditto for Jean Lassalle, yet at 2.5% in the polls, that the shop had to add urgently to its catalog.
