• To improve the effectiveness of the emergency services, the departmental fire and rescue service renews its fleet of vehicles every year.

  • About forty machines have just been acquired with the arrival in the barracks of new vans and tank trucks.

  • During the summer, firefighters will also intervene on board a hovercraft in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.

“Security is certainly priceless, but it also has a cost”.

President of the departmental council of Ille-et-Vilaine, Jean-Luc Chenut knows the situation of local finances well.

Among its powers, the community, in the same way as the municipalities, must in particular finance the departmental fire and rescue service (Sdis).

For that of Ille-et-Vilaine, it's a bit like Christmas at the moment with the reception in recent weeks of brand new gear.

There are about forty in total with an investment of 5.55 million euros which will be spread over 18 months.

"Equipment is changing very quickly and we have to renew our equipment to improve efficiency during interventions and improve rescue", underlines Captain Christophe Tardivel, head of the equipment department at Sdis 35. Six new pump-tonne vans used for fires or road accidents have just been affected in the main barracks of the department.

More efficient in extinguishing fires, thanks in particular to a system of hoses positioned in hanks, they also ensure better safety for firefighters with three-point seat belts and staggered seats.

Two large swivel ladders of 25 meters each are also available to the department's firefighters.

With the main novelty being the appearance of an LED lighting system much more powerful than the old halogens during night-time interventions.

More visible with their yellow bumpers, eight new ambulances have also joined the fleet of Sdis 35 vehicles, which has around 800 distributed in all the barracks of the department.

But the great novelty this year for firefighters is of course the arrival of a hovercraft, equipment which the departmental fire and rescue services of Corrèze and Vendée have already recently had.

Allowing you to go on water, sand or mud, it will be put into service during the summer with the mission of bringing help to people in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.
