The Berlin public prosecutor's office has closed the investigation against the federal executive committee of the Greens because of controversial special corona payments.

The initial suspicion of infidelity was not confirmed, the spokesman for the Berlin Attorney General, Martin Steltner, told the AFP news agency on Wednesday.

The prosecutor's office in the capital had initiated the investigation, which has now been discontinued, in January.

The reason was several advertisements from private individuals, as Steltner explained at the time.

The case concerned a corona bonus that the Greens board had granted itself in 2020.

In 2020, all employees of the Green Federal Office received the bonus of 1,500 euros per person.

He was supposed to compensate for the burdens that arose from working in the home office and the renovation of the building.

At the beginning of the investigation, the board was entitled to make the relevant decisions “from the point of view of all those involved”.

The members have since repaid the bonuses.

At the time, the six-member body included the current Federal Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, and the current Federal Economics Minister, Robert Habeck, as party chairmen.

Other members were the current Greens co-chairman Ricarda Lang, the then deputy leader Jamila Schäfer, the then federal manager Michael Kellner and treasurer Marc Urbatsch.
