It was in connection with the church's reconciliation and public apologies to the Sami for previous abuses that the question of Olof Bergkvistgatan was raised in a citizen proposal.

The proposal was submitted by a private person in Gällivare.

- We have had the policy to make a policy when it comes to name changes so we have something to go after, says Henrik Lyngmark who is head of the environment, construction and rescue administration.

But no policy has been made yet.

- I saw that there was a case regarding name change in January and thought that now finally, but it was a change from a church sign - Trinity Road - which changed its name to something more commercial - Handelsvägen, says Kerstin Andersson.

It is with surprise that she states that she has waited five months for information on when or if the sign honoring Olof Bergkvist will be taken down.

Discussions and name changes in many places

She has followed parallel discussions at Karolinska Institutet, among other places, where both roads and lecture halls have changed their name, as they were named after Anders Retzius, who, among other things, was behind measurements of skulls and collected remains for research.

- It is the nagging method that applies, opinion formation and pressure that is needed.

It may not be so successful but it is necessary, concludes Kerstin Andersson, representative of Amnesty Sápmi.

In Gällivare, the official who has been given the assignment promises that it will not take too long.

  - We have a year on us, that time we will try to keep.
