The Republic of Nauru celebrated its National Day at Expo 2020 Dubai, by focusing on the country's ambitious plan to meet the challenges of climate change and the unique culture of this small island nation in the Pacific Ocean, which participates in the exhibition with the slogan: "A small island with great potential".

"Through her participation, Nauru is promoting its position as an emerging investment hub with abundant and essential resources for the clean energy industry and transformation of its economy," said Minister of State for Foreign Trade Dr.

He added, "We cherish the flourishing relations with Nauru, as one of the important partners of the UAE in the Pacific region, and we look forward to strengthening our cooperation with Nauru in various fields, in order to achieve mutual benefit and prosperity for our two countries."

Renee Gadabo said, “Nauru, like Dubai, connects minds to create the future, and we are working with an award-winning team of US-based designers and architects to develop a new master plan for our island.”

Nauru is the smallest island country in the world, with a total land area of 21 square kilometres, which is five times the area of the Dubai Expo site. It is a flat atoll located in the southwest of the Pacific Ocean, just below the equator.

“Most of the visitors who come to our booth do not know anything about Nauru, nor do they realize that it is a country in the first place,” said Chandi Akin, director of the Nauru Pavilion.

Some enter through the gates to stamp Expo passports, while others are looking for information about the island.

We would like to put Nauru on the map again by being here.”

facts

As Nauru celebrates its National Day, Expo Dubai presented seven facts about this island nation.

1 - The island of Nauru was classified at one time among the richest countries in the world, because it contains a huge amount of phosphate, as its per capita GDP exceeded that of some oil-rich Arab countries.

Control of phosphate reserves passed to the island's residents after it gained its independence in 1968;

However, the decline in phosphate quantities and the consequent decline in GDP prompted Nauru to explore opportunities to diversify its economy.

2 - Nauru has not recorded any cases of coronavirus (Covid-19) since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to figures issued by the World Health Organization;

The island's authorities are also imposing a two-week quarantine on travelers coming to it, including the island's citizens themselves.

3- The total population of Nauru is about 12,500 people, divided into 12 tribes, symbolized by a 12-ray star in its national flag.

Each Nauru tribe, as shown by its pavilion at the Dubai Expo, has a special character, braids, traditional dress and characteristics that distinguish it from the other, according to the different historical periods on the island.

4- The white sandy beaches of Nauru are being swallowed up by the Indian Ocean as a result of climate change;

Therefore, the island nation builds seawalls to protect it.

It is a country surrounded by coral reefs, which prevented the formation of a seaport, although the channels in the reefs allow small boats to reach the island.

5- The people of Nauru celebrate International Mother Language Day annually on February 21, an initiative launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2000 to celebrate and protect all the languages of the world.

Nauru is an Austronesian language spoken by more than half of the population;

Although some of the original terms have become colloquial, moving away from their traditional roots, the language is still alive and universally recognized at the United Nations.

6- Weightlifting is the most popular sport on Nauru among both women and men;

The country won its first Commonwealth gold medal in the sport in 1990. The island nation has won a total of 10 gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, won by female and male weightlifters, including several silver and bronze.

7- The entire population density is concentrated in the coastal areas, while the center of the island is uninhabited as a result of phosphate mining.

On Nauru there is only one ring road around the island;

It only takes a 30-minute drive to make a trip around the entire island.

• 21 square kilometres, an area of the island that can be circumnavigated in 30 minutes by car.

Shandy Akin:

• “Most of the visitors to our pavilion do not know anything about Nauru, and do not realize that it is an existing country.”
