• The Rennes metropolitan area has voted in favor of the creation of four residential bicycle parking lots for the second half of 2022.

  • The ambition of these secure spaces is to fight against the theft of two-wheelers, which is a real obstacle to practice.

  • A subscription at 40 euros per year will be offered to people who do not have a secure garage.

The news was announced discreetly, during a banal deliberation on the pricing of the new car parks at Hôtel-Dieu and Courrouze.

Adopted unanimously, the proposal launched by Matthieu Theurier is nevertheless expected by thousands of cyclists, especially those living in apartments.

In the second half of the year, four residential bicycle parking lots will be set up in the Breton capital.

Offered by subscription, these boxes will be installed in place of car parking to offer a storage solution for cyclists who do not have a garage or a secure place to park their bikes.

“The law obliges condominiums to have a bicycle garage.

But in reality, we know that this is not always possible.

We wanted to offer a secure option for residents who do not have one,” explains Matthieu Theurier, vice-president of Rennes Métropole for mobility.

“Bike theft is a plague”

To make this decision, the community relied on two voices.

That of the inhabitants who had voted for these street bike garages during the Citizen Factory.

But also on that of the barometer of the Federation of Bicycle Users (FUB) which placed the theft of bicycles among the worst brakes on the practice in Rennes.

In a survey of our readers, we had confirmation that many two-wheelers were stolen from underground car parks or collective premises in buildings.

“Bike theft is a plague.

And we know that it is a deterrent for some, ”continues the elected environmentalist.

Already established in Lille and Grenoble, these boxes will be tested in four sectors of Rennes (north station, Roazhon Park, Chézy and Alphonse Guérin) and will offer around twenty places in total.

Access to these boxes will be possible through a paid subscription offered by Citedia via the Korrigo card.

On Thursday evening, a rate of 40 euros per year was unanimously adopted by the Rennes Métropole council to launch this experiment in the second half of 2022. “The C-Parks like that of the station are free and they will remain so.

We are going to offer 500 additional spaces along the route of metro line B.

But we needed an additional offer,” concludes Matthieu Theurier.
