The Sarre, a small region along the French border, has less than one million inhabitants.

The Saar changes sides approximately every twenty years.

The domination of the Christian Democrats since 1999 should end this Sunday with a return of the region to the bosom of the Social Democratic Party.

In a poll published Friday, March 25, the SPD is thirteen points ahead of the CDU.

Intermediate elections usually benefit the opposition, but for the German conservatives who suffered a historic defeat in September, this Sunday should be bitter.

The announced failure falls badly for the new chairman of the CDU,

Friedrich Merz

.

Two other regional elections in May in Länder also led by the Christian Democrats promise to be difficult for the conservatives.

Chancellor Scholz's SPD can hope at the end of these three elections to regain three regions, including the largest in the country, North Rhine-Westphalia.

For the new majority, such successes would constitute confirmation.

As often, coalitions will be necessary.

If that in power between Social Democrats, Ecologists and Liberals were to be put in place in one or more regions where people vote, this would facilitate the action of the government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which would thus increase its majority in the upper house. which represents the regions, the Bundesrat.

Its support is needed for bills which affect the competences of the Länder.
