After the invasion of Ukraine began in late February, Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu made media appearances almost daily.

But, after March 11, it ended.

Shoju disappeared from the public eye, without explanation.

According to the Pentagon, the US Secretary of Defense has for a long time tried to arrange a telephone conversation with Sjojgu, without success.

"Obviously you are hiding something"

Ludmila Pöppel is a professor of Russian at Stockholm University, and has political language and manipulation as her research focus.

She tells SVT Nyheter that there are various possible explanations for a Russian top politician suddenly disappearing from the media public.

- One of them is that Russia's defense minister is really sick, another is that people are dissatisfied with him.

It is obvious that you are hiding something, but it is difficult to draw any concrete conclusions.

If Sergei Shoigu were sick, why not just communicate it?

- There has been an information vacuum in Russia.

This means not only that the information is missing but also that misinformation is spread.

The point is, only what Putin and his regime want to communicate comes out in public.

If the Sergei Sjojgu cliffs that the Kremlin spreads are fake, it is because they want to manipulate and hide the truth, says Ludmila Pöppel.

"Forging such" evidence "is a way to show the world that the Kremlin has everything under control, she says.
