The police have a new way of working to reduce the investigation time for everyday crimes such as shoplifting, drug crimes, vandalism and violations of the knife law.

These are simple investigations that can be completed on site by the police.

Of just over 110 investigations during the period 1 February to 21 March, approximately 70 investigations have now been completed.

- Despite the fact that investigations are carried out in a shorter time, it has not had a negative effect on quality.

Rather the opposite.

The main hearings are held faster, which means that the memory images that heard people tell about are fresher, which in turn provides a more legally secure basis for the district court's assessment, says Peter Jonsson, deputy chamber chief and deputy chief prosecutor at the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Want to keep the working method

Rapid prosecution has been tried before in Stockholm and Norrbotten, among other places, and is a trial operation.

Now the police hope that quick prosecution can be done throughout Västerbotten and not just in Umeå and that the operation is permanent.

- The advantage is that there will be a quick reaction from society to a crime, says Sofia Möller, head of preliminary investigations at the police.
