• After the concrete spill on one of the main road sections of his town, the mayor of Krautergersheim, in Alsace, decided to cut traffic on Monday morning.

  • A shock action that he undertook to respond to “a security problem”, but which also stems from a weariness of the residents, regularly confronted with a degradation of the roadway according to him.

  • The Béton du Ried company admits "human error", but also disputes certain figures put forward by the elected official.

It was the drop of concrete that broke the camel's back.

In Krautergersheim (Bas-Rhin), a small town of 1,700 inhabitants located about twenty kilometers from Strasbourg, the case has taken on unprecedented proportions.

And a few corks.

Last Monday, around 8:45 am, Mayor René Hoelt was warned of a concrete flow on the D207, which crosses the town from east to west.

The incident too many for the city councilor who decides to close the road: “I blocked traffic in both directions because we had to act quickly to remove the concrete immediately before it dried.

I didn't ask myself any questions.

“A security problem”

According to the elected official, a truck traveling from the Béton du Ried company, located on the municipal ban, would have lost two cubic meters of concrete on several parts of the section.

Leading thereby to the deterioration of the roadway and “a safety problem”, explains the mayor to justify his decision: “The company reacted and came to clean up.

But it still took two hours.

»

If he decided “not to leave that”, René Hoelt explains that the situation has been going on “for years”: “The residents are exasperated.

But this is the first time that there has been so much concrete in the same place.

In question, still according to the mayor, the passage through the town "of 4,000 vehicles per day, including 800 trucks" transporting both concrete, but also gravel from a gravel pit located in the neighboring town.

“Every week, the municipal workers pick up two wheelbarrows of gravel,” says the elected official.

According to him, the problem would come from the fact that “the trucks are too loaded”: “It causes the spill.

“A human error”

For his part, Didier Laemmel, general manager of Béton du Ried, admits “a human error”: “The type of concrete transported was more liquid and the driver did not turn the top quickly enough.

We reacted immediately, but we made a mistake, we can't deny it.

»

On the other hand, he disagrees with several statements by the mayor of Krautergersheim: “Two cubic meters of concrete, that represents approximately 4.5 tonnes of material.

However, my guys picked up two or three wheelbarrows, or about 150 kilos.

“It all started in exaggeration”

Didier Laemmel also disputes the figure of “800 vehicles” which cross the town per day: “It is a total heresy.

We work nine hours a day, so imagine how many vehicles we would need to load per hour.

“ Finally, he specifies “that no overload is tolerated”: “It all started in exaggeration.

»

However, the two parties do not want to "enter into a controversy", according to Didier Laemmel.

Same opinion on the side of René Hoelt: “We do not want to prohibit the crossing of trucks, on the contrary, we are for economic activity!

But everyone has to be careful.
