Dressed in yellow jackets, equipped with water hoses and burners, there are currently a handful of county administrative board staff on Öland.

Their task is to burn last year's grass.

- By doing so, the grass that grows up will be of a much better quality than if we did not do this, says Johan Jansson, reserve manager at the County Administrative Board in Kalmar County.

The animals are happy

By burning last year's grass, the new grass that grows up will be of a finer quality and more appreciated by the animals that normally graze in the area.

But for those who work with burning grass, it is important to be on your guard and make sure that the fire does not spread to juniper bushes or other trees.

And that it is done at the right time.

- The month of March is good, if you wait too long, the new grass has started to grow and then it is not as easy anymore, he says.

The wind helps

As protection against fires, water hoses are laid out in the area and to help make the fire do its job, they have a wind that pushes the fire in front of them in the area.

- It is ideal weather to do grass burning now, says Johan Jansson.
