  According to reports, his wife Katherine confirmed that Willhead died of the new crown.

  In 1987, Wilhead created the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) to compress images, and in 2012, GIF was named Word of the Year by the Oxford American Dictionary.

Wilhead was awarded the Webby Lifetime Achievement Award for inventing the GIF.
