Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai intend, for the first time, to launch an award for delivery bike drivers who abide by the ethics and laws of traffic and traffic, to curb the abuses that resulted in the death of 22 cyclists last year, as a result of mistakes they caused, as well as nine deaths, due to the mistakes of vehicle drivers.

Dubai Police revealed during a press conference yesterday, with the Roads and Transport Authority, that 20,312 traffic violations were issued, and 880 bikes were impounded, as a result of their drivers' non-compliance with the traffic law, as part of a joint initiative with the authority to limit these abuses on the road.

In detail, yesterday, Dubai Police, in cooperation with the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, launched a joint initiative to enhance the safety of cyclists and control road security by limiting the excesses of delivery bike drivers.

The Deputy Director of the General Department for Excellence and Entrepreneurship, Brigadier Dr. Saleh Al Hamrani, revealed a new award that will be launched by Dubai Police and the Roads Authority, to encourage delivery service providers and cyclists to abide by traffic etiquette and traffic laws, pointing out that Dubai is the first city to take this initiative based on requirements that include not committing any crime. Traffic violations, the driver’s traffic record, and the role of service providers in complying with security and safety standards, and the value of the award will be determined later.

He added that Dubai Police searched for the best practices in the world, and did not find such an award before, and coordinated with the Roads Authority to launch it, with the aim of motivating committed drivers, and building an integrated system that ensures full commitment by companies and drivers, by conducting opinion polls, and determining the number of Working hours for drivers, and a suitable working period.

The Deputy Director of the General Department of Traffic in Dubai Police, Colonel Juma bin Suwaidan, said that 20,312 violations were issued, and 880 bikes were impounded, whose drivers did not comply with traffic laws.

He added that Dubai Police monitored complaints about the behavior of delivery bike drivers, so awareness campaigns were organized for them, to ensure their compliance, noting that the most prominent violations committed include failure to adhere to the lane and not leaving sufficient distance between vehicles.

He appealed to delivery companies and service providers to train their drivers and make them aware of the importance of adhering to traffic laws, and adhering to security and safety requirements, such as wearing a helmet to maintain their safety.

In addition, the Executive Director of the Licensing Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority, Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, said that the authority has resorted to updating the training programs for delivery bike drivers who wish to obtain driving licenses, by increasing the number of training hours, including two hours in the evening.

He added that the authority launched a package of initiatives to educate drivers of delivery bikes, after their numbers increased, and the accident and death index increased, stressing that there are serious efforts to organize a work structure for this sector that enhances safety and maintains road security, by organizing workshops for service provider companies. And attention to training and educating drivers, as well as studying the establishment of about 40 rest points for “delivery” drivers, so that they can resort to them if they need to.

He appealed to motorists to take into account delivery bike drivers and leave a safe distance between them, pointing out that he read an impressive message written by one of these drivers on his bike, saying, "Please leave a safe distance, my mother is waiting for me," pointing out that there are accidents that occur as a result of mistakes made by motorists, And the victims go to the delivery riders.
