• Last August, when the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan, 85 refugees were welcomed in Lille.

  • Among them were about twenty artists threatened in their country.

  • All helped by the municipality since their arrival, 8 of them will also receive a scholarship from the Series Mania festival.

While the war has been raging in Ukraine for a month and more than three million Ukrainians have fled their country, we tend to forget that a similar tragedy was played out barely a year earlier, in Afghanistan.

At the time, when the Taliban regained control of the country, the city of Lille had welcomed 85 Afghan refugees, including around twenty artists.

Among them, eight will benefit from a creation aid grant awarded by the Series Mania festival which ends on Friday.

For the closing of the Series Mania festival, it will not only be the stars of the small screen who will be honoured.

At 10 a.m., in the village of the festival, eight Afghan exiles will each receive a grant of 1,500 euros awarded by the organization of the festival.

The amount of these scholarships is partly derived from the sale to the public of products derived from the festival.

Scholarships that have “symbolic” value

For the director of Séries Mania, Laurence Herszberg, it is a matter of supporting these artists so that they can continue their creative work in exile.

The money must be used in particular to buy them equipment.

However, since their arrival in Lille, the city has mobilized to give them the means to continue their activities “under professional conditions”.

For the municipality and for the festival, these scholarships are above all a “symbol”.

The Series Mania scholarship winners are Habibah Ahmadi, artist and painter, Atefeh Amini, theater actress, director and painter, Samiolah Atei, filmmaker and documentary filmmaker, Mahdi Ehsani, editor, cameraman, screenwriter and director, Maryam Gholam Ali, painter, Sakineh Gholma Ali, stylist and painter, Ali Momeni, painter, graphic designer, designer and scenographer and Atila Noori, author, theater director and director.
