On May 15, 1991, Xi Jinping, then secretary of the Fuzhou Municipal Party Committee, came to Fujian Normal University to give a situation report to more than 1,400 teachers and students.

Comrade Xi Jinping slowly unfolded a magnificent picture of Fuzhou's 20-year economic and social development strategic plan with rich examples and detailed data, which is fascinating.

Combining his own growth experience, he earnestly admonished the students that "the society most needs and welcomes people who have the spirit of practical work and can solve practical problems, while the rhetoric and underappreciated 'guests' are the least welcome", and urged the students to be practical Home, do not be "guests".

Interview Team: Chen Zhiyong Shi Xinming Cheng Huibin Le Huabin Yu Chengwei

Interview Date: August 27, 2020

Interview location: Conference Room 710, Administration Building, Fujian Normal University

Interview Team: Chen Xiaohong, Zhang Aimin, and Teacher Lin Luwen, hello!

On May 15, 1991, Xi Jinping, then secretary of the Fuzhou Municipal Party Committee, came to Fujian Normal University to report on the situation for teachers and students.

The three teachers listened to the report on the spot, please recall the scene at that time.

Chen Xiaohong

: At that time, I was a fourth-year student in the Music Department of Fujian Normal University.

Nearly 30 years later, I still clearly remember that Secretary Xi came to the school to give a report on a Wednesday afternoon.

Since the 1980s, the Normal University has designated every Wednesday afternoon as a political study time, and this practice has continued to this day.

The location of the report meeting was the auditorium of the provincial military region. The report was attended by both student representatives from various departments and backbone teachers.

The enthusiasm of teachers and students to participate is very high. The thousand-person auditorium is full, and even the back aisle and the entrances and exits on both sides of the auditorium are full of people.

Zhang Aimin

: Around 3:00 in the afternoon, Secretary Xi and the school leaders walked into the venue together, and the teachers and students stood up and applauded.

Secretary Xi is tall, tall, and steady.

I remember that he was wearing a white shirt at the time, and as soon as he entered the venue, he nodded frequently to the teachers and students, without any official air.

At that time, I was a student union cadre in the department and was responsible for maintaining the order on the scene. I was assigned to sit in the front row seat by the aisle, so I was able to see Secretary Xi’s demeanor up close.

Young, handsome and with a warm smile are the first impressions Secretary Xi left on me.

Lin Luwen

: At that time, I was the head of the school radio station, mainly responsible for publicizing and reporting important news about the school.

Although I have heard many reports on the situation, the one I remember most clearly and deeply so far is the report made by Secretary Xi for us.

At that time, many Hokkien people did not speak standard and standard Mandarin, and the accent was heavy, and they were attracted by the well-spoken and magnetic Mandarin of the secretary.

Interview Team: What did Comrade Xi Jinping say at the report?

Zhang Aimin

: The title of Secretary Xi's report is "Fuzhou Prospects in the 1990s".

Although he prepared the manuscript, he basically went out of the manuscript during the reporting process. He didn't use official accents, and he didn't sing high-profile. He used language that our young people could easily accept, citing scriptures and witty words.

The report was interrupted many times by the warm applause of the teachers and students. The scene was full of laughter and the atmosphere was very lively.

Secretary Xi listed a large number of facts and data, focused on Fuzhou's historical evolution, characteristics and advantages and development potential, and elaborated on Fuzhou's development ideas and concepts in the "Eighth Five-Year Plan" and ten-year plan.

He is familiar with the various data of Fuzhou's construction, and has a clear understanding of the various measures of Fuzhou's development.

Secretary Xi shared with us his work and life in Liangjiahe, northern Shaanxi.

He said: "The society most needs and welcomes people who have the spirit of practical work and can solve practical problems, while the rhetoric and under-appreciated 'kelikong' is the least welcome." My impression of the word "kelikong" mentioned by Secretary Xi particularly profound.

Chen Xiaohong

: Secretary Xi's voice was low in his speech, but it was infectious.

Looking forward to the development of Fuzhou, Secretary Xi slowly unfolded a picture of a modern metropolis, which made people fascinated, and made the students present excited, full of expectations for the future, and secretly motivated.

In 1992, Secretary Xi personally presided over and compiled the "20-Year Economic and Social Development Strategic Vision of Fuzhou" known as the "3820" project, which scientifically planned the strategic goals of Fuzhou's three-, eight-, and 20-year economic and social development.

The "3820" project is a grand and far-sighted vision, which draws a blueprint for Fuzhou's development and construction, and greatly promotes the reform and opening-up process of Fuzhou.

Secretary Xi told us earnestly: "The only correct way for contemporary young intellectuals to become talents is to go deep into reality, combine workers and peasants, inherit and carry forward the fine tradition of patriotism, and shoulder the historical mission of revitalizing China. Since then, the mainstream of the youth movement in China is also the direction of the contemporary youth movement, and it is the only way for the younger generation to become talented.” Secretary Xi encouraged us to participate more in social practice, and mentioned that the Fuzhou Municipal Party Committee has issued a document, requiring departments at all levels to participate in college students. Social practice provides convenience.

Interview Team: Mr. Zhang, just now you mentioned that Comrade Xi Jinping used a word in his report - "kelikong". Does this word have any special meaning?

Zhang Aimin

: At that time, I thought that "guests are empty" should mean empty words and not doing practical things, but I didn't particularly understand its connotation.

After the lecture, I still learned from my classmates in the Chinese Department that "Kelikong" is a character in the play "Frontline" written by the Soviet writer Kornychuk.

In the play, the writer depicts the front-line special correspondent "Kelikong" in a satirical style. He does not go deep into the front-line troops during field interviews. .

Later, "kelikong" was used to refer to people who are exaggerated and flashy.

I am very impressed with the word "Kelikong".

In 2013, General Secretary Xi Jinping painted a more vivid portrait of "Kelikong" at the party's mass line education and practice work conference.

He pointed out: "Some do not pay attention to actual results, do not work hard to solve existing contradictions and problems, do not do things that are difficult to impress the leaders, do not do things that have little impact, and do not look good in work reports or year-end summaries. If you don’t do things, the ceremony is followed by one, the summary is one after the other, the awards are awarded one by one, and in the end, it’s all ‘guests’.” This sentence brought my thoughts back to nearly 30 years. On the afternoon of the previous Wednesday, Secretary Xi's earnest teachings seemed to echo in my ears again - to be a doer, not a "guest."

Interview Team: What hopes did Comrade Xi Jinping put forward for young college students at the report meeting?

Chen Xiaohong

: Secretary Xi is very concerned about the growth of young students.

The entire report lasted for more than two hours, and he spent nearly half of the time talking about talent training in colleges and universities.

Secretary Xi said that to promote the reform and opening up of Fuzhou and realize the great economic and social development of Fuzhou in the 1990s, it is inseparable from the active participation of colleges and universities and the participation of the majority of intellectuals.

Therefore, it is necessary to give full play to the intellectual and talent advantages of colleges and universities, and fully mobilize the enthusiasm and creativity of intellectuals.

Secretary Xi attaches great importance to the social practice of college students. When talking about the growth of college students, he said that intellectuals, especially contemporary college students, should clarify the historical mission they shoulder. It is not enough to have the desire and conditions to become talents. Study, learn from the workers and peasants, be willing to be a primary school student, and train and grow in the fiery social life.

Secretary Xi also mentioned that party committees and governments at all levels should care about and support the social practice of college students and actively create conditions for them.

Lin Luwen

: Secretary Xi said that historical opportunities were unusual for college students in the early 1990s.

He hoped that we must follow the party's basic line, study Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought hard, study scientific and cultural knowledge assiduously, unswervingly take the road of combining with workers and peasants, actively respond to the call of the times, and contribute to reform, opening up and socialist modernization. Build and contribute all your ingenuity and ingenuity, and take on the glorious mission entrusted by history.

Secretary Xi's concern, concern and love for young people are naturally revealed from his words.

He is like an amiable professor, who uses his rich life experience to preach and solve our doubts, and adds the "spiritual calcium" for our growth with lofty ideals and beliefs.

Interview Team: How has this report influenced you and your classmates?

Lin Luwen

: After the report meeting, I hurried back to the school's radio office, and immediately called the backbone of the communication department and the editorial department to learn the spirit of the report meeting.

When exchanging opinions on the draft, a student reporter blurted out: "Secretary Xi made the situation report so vivid, let's broadcast the original words, the students will love to listen to it." Everyone agreed.

With the approval of the leaders in charge, we broadcast this important news through speakers set up in the teaching area, dormitory building and canteen that night, and replayed it at noon the next day.

Secretary Xi's report aroused strong repercussions among the teachers and students of the whole school. The students all said that "it is really rare to be able to tell the situation report so vividly".

The school also specially organized two learning exchange meetings, where I talked about my learning experience.

Secretary Xi said: "Students must exercise and grow in the fiery social life. The knowledge and skills learned in the classroom must not be hidden or built behind closed doors. They must be boldly put into social practice to grind, otherwise they will be born. Rust, and it will end up as a 'talk on paper'." This sentence is unforgettable in my life.

Chen Xiaohong

: As a student party member, I felt a heavy responsibility after listening to Secretary Xi's report.

Secretary Xi exhorted us to "be a doer and not be a 'guest'", which made us understand more that the spirit of hard work is the only way to realize the value of life.

After graduating, the students went on to different jobs one after another.

In accordance with Secretary Xi's instructions, everyone faces the reality, goes deep into practice, works hard, does not be "gutless", and works hard on all fronts with down-to-earth efforts, and has now become an expert in various fields.

Zhang Aimin

: After listening to Secretary Xi's report, everyone has more confidence in Fuzhou's future development.

Many students believe that Fuzhou's development is indeed promising, and they have expressed their desire to stay in Fuzhou to work and contribute to Fuzhou's reform and opening up.

Secretary Xi warned us to "don't do rhetoric and 'gutsy'", which made me understand more that hard work is the key to realizing the value of life.

In July 1993, I graduated from Fujian Normal University. The school recommended me to work in the Provincial Education Commission, but after thinking about it again and again, I decided to start from the grassroots level and stay in Normal University.

At that time, staying in colleges and universities to do administrative work was not very popular, but rather a "drudgery".

My first job was to be responsible for graduate employment dispatch in the student office.

Employment work is of great importance and involves a wide range of areas. Every employment registration card needs to be handwritten, checked and stamped, and no mistakes can be made.

At that time, there was no advanced technology and equipment. In order not to delay graduates from leaving school, I often had to work overtime overnight.

July and August are the hottest times in Fuzhou, and I usually sweat profusely when I write.

In order to keep the materials clean and tidy, I had to prepare a dry towel and wipe off the sweat after writing a copy.

When the registration card was all written, the dry towel turned into a wet towel, but I still rode my bicycle happily and sent the materials to the Provincial Education Commission.

This is my own job, no matter how hard or tired I am, I have to do it conscientiously and responsibly.

With the joint efforts of everyone, the school was rated as "National Advanced Collective for Employment of College Graduates".

Interview Team: I heard that when Comrade Xi Jinping worked in Fuzhou, he went to Fujian Normal University for research and guidance many times, and did many practical things for teachers and students.

Could you please briefly describe the situation in this regard.

Lin Luwen

: Let me tell a story about Secretary Xi "building bridges" for our teachers and students.

In the 1980s, Student Street, which was only separated by a wall from Fujian Normal University, gradually became a famous food street in Fuzhou. The flow of people and traffic increased sharply, and both residents’ travel and teachers and students were greatly affected. I was scratched and hit by vehicles on the road, and I was almost hit several times when I was studying.

This matter has not been well resolved, and it has become a problem that plagues teachers, students and surrounding residents.

Once, Secretary Xi came to the school for research and presided over a symposium for teachers and students.

One of the old teachers mentioned this incident inadvertently, which attracted the attention of Secretary Xi.

He demanded that the street be renovated immediately, and organized relevant departments to study and formulate solutions as soon as possible.

Under the personal promotion of Secretary Xi, the overpass was soon incorporated into the urban construction plan of Fuzhou.

After the overpass was built, the teachers, students and residents responded enthusiastically and expressed their gratitude to Secretary Xi.

Until now, there are still many old professors who often say "Secretary Xi has built a bridge for us".

Zhang Aimin

: At that time, Fujian Normal University was Secretary Xi's liaison university.

Secretary Xi often walks into classrooms, laboratories and activity rooms to listen to teachers and students, solve problems, and do practical things.

For example, in the construction of the comprehensive gymnasium of Normal University, Secretary Xi has repeatedly asked about it and personally guided the construction of the project.

After serving as the provincial leader, he also went to the school to hold a symposium to give important instructions on the construction of the gymnasium.

With the care and help of Secretary Xi, Normal University took the lead in building a fully functional comprehensive gymnasium in the province.

Secretary Xi is also very concerned about the mental health of students.

He said: "It is necessary to improve the quality of students, improve their ability to analyze and solve problems, and enable them to cope with changes in social diversity. Quality includes morality, intelligence, and physicality. Both IQ and EQ are needed. Emotional quotient refers to willpower, ability to deal with The attitude towards problems, etc., all need to be cultivated. The school must consciously cultivate and improve the psychological quality of students.” Therefore, the school took the lead in establishing a mental health guidance center to provide students with mental health education, counseling and counseling services.

When Secretary Xi was working in Fuzhou, he vigorously advocated the work style of "doing it right away and doing real work", and vigorously promoted the working mechanism of "one-building office" for the approval of investment projects.

We, Fujian Normal University, earnestly implement the requirement of "do it right away", grasp the needs of students, integrate department resources, build a student office, and realize "one-stop" service. km" problem.

Secretary Xi's love for the people and practical work style have set a glorious example for us.

As ideological and political workers in colleges and universities, we must sink our minds, bend our waists, and bend our ears, listen to what students want, care about what students think, solve their needs, and be young people in the new era. The student's confidant, enthusiast and guide.

Interview Team: Mr. Chen, I heard that you later participated in an interview with Comrade Xi Jinping, then Governor of Fujian Province. Please briefly introduce the situation at that time.

Chen Xiaohong

: At the beginning of 2000, I worked in the Secretariat of the Provincial Youth Federation.

According to the work arrangement, I, along with the leaders of the Communist Youth League, accompanied Yang Xiaohuai, the president of the "Children of China" magazine, to interview Comrade Xi Jinping, then the governor of Fujian Province. My job was to assist in recording.

In the meeting room of the provincial government office, Governor Xi said kindly as soon as he saw us: "Welcome to come." During the interview, no matter what questions President Yang asked, Governor Xi answered very frankly, as if he was a family member with us. .

The edited version of this interview was published in the 2000 issue of the magazine "Children of China", under the title "Xi Jinping: How I Entered Politics".

Governor Xi said that his growth and progress should be said to have started in the seven years in northern Shaanxi.

The biggest gains are two points: one is to let him know what is practical, what is to seek truth from facts, and what is to be the masses; the other is to cultivate his self-confidence.

When sorting out the interview records, we found that the frequently used words in the interviews were "people" and "mass".

Among them, Governor Xi made a deep impression on me: "For us communists, the common people are our parents, we must keep in mind the purpose of serving the people wholeheartedly, and all the principles and policies of the party and the government must be based on Whether it conforms to the interests of the broadest masses of the people is the highest standard. Always keep in mind that you are the public servants of the people, always take the people's food and clothing in mind, and decide whether the people support or not, whether the people agree or not, whether the people are happy or not, and whether the people are happy or not. "Promise or not" as the starting point and end point of thinking about problems and doing business, loving the people like you love your parents, seeking benefits for the people, and leading the people to a better life, you must not be high above and fish the people, this is our Communist Party and those reactionaries The fundamental difference of rulers."
