President Moon Jae-in has nominated Lee Chang-yong, director of the International Monetary Fund for Asia and Pacific, as the next nominee for the governor of the Bank of Korea.

After serving as vice chairman of the Financial Services Commission and chief economist at the Asian Development Bank, Lee moved to the International Monetary Fund in 2014.

The Blue House said, "This candidate has extensive knowledge and experience in the economy, finances and finance in general, and will contribute to price stability through stable monetary and credit policies."

When asked if there was any prior communication with the president-elect Yoon Seok-yeol, a high-ranking official at the Blue House explained, "In order to minimize the vacancy in the office of the Bank of Korea governor, we have heard the opinions of the elected president and announced the nominee."
