The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) announced today, Wednesday, that it will deploy 4 new combat groups in Eastern European countries, warning Russia against using nuclear weapons in its war on Ukraine.

"NATO leaders will decide at their summit tomorrow (Thursday) to strengthen the defensive position with four new battle groups in Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia, bringing the number of fighting groups deployed to 8 from the Baltic to the Black Sea," NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said during a press conference at the alliance headquarters.

Stoltenberg noted that NATO has strengthened its support for Ukraine by providing advanced air defense systems, anti-tank systems, and various types of weapons and ammunition.

The Secretary General of NATO expected that members of the alliance would agree to provide additional support, including assistance in cyber security, as well as equipment to help Ukraine protect itself from chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.

Stoltenberg pledged to do everything necessary to ensure the protection and defense of allies, stressing the existence of "plans to protect all allies from attack by nuclear weapons."

"Russia must stop this dangerous rhetoric and understand that a nuclear war should never happen, and that it will never be able to win a nuclear war," he added.

Stoltenberg warned that Russia's use of nuclear weapons would have wide consequences, and would change the nature of the war. Addressing Russia, Stoltenberg said, "You cannot win a nuclear war."

The Secretary-General also stressed that NATO supports Ukraine in its right to self-defense, explaining at the same time that NATO is not part of the conflict, and that it does not want to enter a war with Russia.

He added that the alliance will not send troops to Ukraine and will not impose a no-fly zone, explaining that declaring this zone may lead to the outbreak of all-out war.

Meanwhile, Stoltenberg denounced China's political support for Russia, including "spreading lies and disinformation," warning that Beijing might provide material support for the war.

"I expect NATO leaders to call on China to desist from supporting Russia's war effort and to join the rest of the world in calling for an immediate end to this war," he added.

And if you add the combat groups that Stoltenberg talked about, it will add to the total of 5,000 NATO forces deployed in the Baltics and Poland since 2017.
