Three workers were killed Monday in an explosion at a dynamite factory near Grevena, in northwestern Greece, the company and local police said.

The explosion, the cause of which has not been identified, also injured one of the guards.

It occurred around 8:45 a.m. local time at the ELTEK factory in Agalaioi, 27 km from Greneva, according to a statement from the company.

like an earthquake

“The building has been completely razed,” Grevena Mayor Yiorgos Dastamanis told Star TV, as locals believed there was an earthquake and thick smoke billowed from the rubble.

ELTEK confirmed in a press release "the death of three employees of the Greneva factory during an accident on the production line".

"The factory complied with the safety rules provided for by law," added the company, which said it was cooperating fully with investigators seeking to establish the origin of the explosion.

This factory produces dynamite intended mainly for public works, according to a local police source.
