Several fires broke out near the former Chernobyl nuclear plant

Several fires have broken out in a restricted area around the former Chernobyl nuclear plant, Ukraine's parliament says, based on European Space Agency satellite images.

Parliament said late Monday that seven fires had broken out over an area of more than two square kilometres.

The area around the nuclear reactor, the site of the worst civilian nuclear disaster, has been under Russian control since the start of the war.

Parliament added that the fires were likely "caused by armed aggression through shelling or arson."

This information could not be independently verified.

However, it is reported that forest fires have occurred in the area in the past.

Huge wildfires broke out around the nuclear reactor in the spring of 2020. At the time, authorities said there was no danger to residents.
