• Unanimity policy in Congress against Sánchez's lurch in the Sahara

  • PP Feijóo accuses Sánchez of governing in a "despotic" and "autistic" manner for breaking the consensus on the Sahara

The President of the Government will appear next Wednesday in Congress but will dilute the explanations that all the groups demand of him about the Copernican turn in relation to Western Sahara, with the obligatory information that he must give to the Chamber on the results of the European Council that will start tomorrow in Brussels to address the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine.

A good part of the parliamentary groups that have demanded their presence in the Chamber consider that it is a "trap", in the words of the Ciudadanos spokesman, Edmundo Bal;

of a "parliamentary trick", according to Íñigo Errejón;

or an unsatisfactory formula for the ERC representative, Gabriel Rufián.

They demand, in short, either a full monograph on the Saharawi question, or that the groups be granted twice the time of intervention to avoid mixing this question with the measures that are intended to be adopted to avoid the escalation of energy prices.

It is also not enough for any of them with the appearance tomorrow in the Commission of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares.

"When you violate 64 UN declarations you must give precise explanations in Congress and not some hidden lines mixed with the European Council", Rufián has riveted.

Discomfort runs through the parliamentary forces after the "swerve" that the Executive has decided to give in the historical position of Spain with respect to its former colony.

They consider it "obscurantist", "unilateral", "inexplicable", "cowardly", a "betrayal", an "accumulation of nonsense" and an "international embarrassment" that not only "abandons a town in the middle of the desert", as Esquerra's spokesman has pointed out, but also "leaves Spain's external credibility below zero", in the words of the Ciudadanos representative.

The criticisms of the groups regarding this issue are unanimous and are mixed with the reproach to the Government for its "inaction" when taking national measures to alleviate the serious economic effects that the invasion of Ukraine by Russia is already having on citizens and in a good number of economic sectors.

In this context, in which important differences have arisen within the Executive, one of the main allies of the investiture bloc, ERC, has not hesitated to urge the minority partner of the Government, United We Can, to "reflect" on the convenience to remain within the Council of Ministers and has described the current political moment as a "dark stage".

Along similar lines, Íñigo Errejón has warned the government that if it remains in these positions "the legislature could get out of hand."

The EH Bildu spokeswoman, Mertxe Aizpurúa, has emphasized that Pedro Sánchez "is moving away from the progressive majority, from his government pact and from his electoral program".
