The entire Andalusian fishing fleet has joined this Monday the
strike called at the national level
by the sector to urge the government and the EU to implement measures to alleviate the lack of profitability of the sector due to
the rise in diesel
from the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The president of the Andalusian Federation of Fishing Associations (Faape) and second vice-president of the Spanish Fishing Confederation (Cepesca), José María Gallart, from Almería, has informed Efe that
one hundred percent of the Andalusian fleet is moored.
In the port of
Sanlúcar de Barrameda
(Cádiz) the fleet has been moored since last Wednesday, since, due to the transport strike, the shipowners stopped fishing to avoid keeping the catches in the fish market.
In this port, and in others such as
Barbate
, several boats had stopped fishing days before last Wednesday, since the rise in fuel prices made it unprofitable for them to go to sea.
In Sanlúcar, the sector has called for a peaceful rally this morning, to which it has invited fishermen and shipowners from neighboring towns.
The General Secretary of Fisheries, Alicia Villauriz, informed the sector last week that, at the proposal of Spain, the Council of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries of the European Union will discuss at its
meeting today, Monday, March 21, how to offer "a coordinated response
of community scope" to the problem of the rise in fuel prices in recent weeks due to the war in Ukraine.
Fuel is one of the main costs of the fishing activity.
