Pedro Sánchez meets the last appointments of his European tour before the celebration of the
Council of Heads of State and Government of the EU
on the next days 24 and 25 to try to agree on a joint response to the serious economic effects that the war in Ukraine is having already in the recovery of the 27 after the pandemic.
The president has sent a message to the
European Commission
to present a "balanced" formula that will ensure energy supply while lowering gas and electricity prices.
Together with the President of the French Republic, Emanuel Macron, Sánchez has once again advocated activating a plan, which he intends to be supported by the entire Union, to intervene in the energy market and decouple the price of gas from the wholesale price of electricity .
An initiative that faces the reluctance of Germany and the northern countries but has found support in the southern axis: Italy, Portugal and Greece.
Sánchez has emphasized that Putin is questioning the basic foundations of the EU and has recognized the diplomatic efforts carried out by Macron to try to prevent the invasion of Russia.
That, he has said, has shown that "diplomacy has not been spared."
It has also affected that Putin has failed to gauge the EU's united response in support of Ukraine: military, humanitarian, political and economic.
For the Spanish president, energy and peace are "basic pillars" of the EU and there he has insisted on the need to guarantee the energy supply and the reasonable price of gas and electricity.
In this sense, he has ordered the European Commission to support, in the next Council of the EU, a joint plan to achieve these objectives.
Sánchez has been sure that a "balanced" formula will be achieved that ensures supply and lower prices.
For his part, Macron has stated that his country will continue to deliver weapons to Ukraine and has pointed to Sánchez's "personal commitment" in the search for solutions to try to curb energy prices and resist the impact of the Russian invasion.
