• A new scanner and a new MRI are inaugurated this Monday by the CHU.

  • Equipment that will improve access to these examinations, which can take very long in the region.

They are officially inaugurated this Monday evening but their use has already begun, as they were expected.

At the Nord Laënnec hospital in Nantes, two “advanced” radiology equipment have been accessible to patients (from the CHU or elsewhere) since the beginning of February.

A small wing of the building has been specially fitted out to accommodate this additional scanner and MRI, whereas the establishment had only three equipment of this type so far.

“This is a very good quality scanner, and a 3 tesla MRI, that is to say high performance, welcomes Hubert Desal, head of the neuroradiology department at the CHU.

We already had one but even running it 24 hours a day, we only pass a limited number of patients.

It must be said that historically, the Pays-de-la-Loire is one of the territories least well endowed with an imaging system.

According to a study by the national union of the medical technology industry (Snitem), the region was even at the bottom of the table in 2017, with 10.4 MRIs per million inhabitants, compared to 14 at the national level.

And with a population that continues to increase, the delays tended to lengthen.

“We had up to three months of waiting, notes Christophe Thibaud, representative of the group of private radiologists Iris Grim, who co-financed the operation called GIE Inova.

Today, we are around four or six weeks, even if it is sometimes longer for certain specialties, such as neurology.

On the other hand, let patients be reassured: in the event of an emergency, the examination is carried out without delay.

Sixteen new scanners and eight MRIs by the end of the year

At Laënnec, the teams believe that these new acquisitions (which cost 4 million euros, half for the purchase and the other for the works) will make it possible to produce 10,000 additional scanners and 7,000 more MRIs per year.

But according to the Regional Health Agency, it is the situation throughout the region which should significantly improve with other equipment expected for 2022, justified by "the saturation of equipment, the appointment times you too long, the aging of the population, the increase in attendance at emergency reception services and the evolution of medical practices”.

“In Pays-de-la-Loire, 52 scanners were installed in 2021;

16 new facilities (including 6 in Loire-Atlantique) have been authorized and will be installed by the end of 2022 (+30% in two years)”, continues the ARS.

For MRIs, the figure was 48 in 2018 and will rise to 56 (including 20 in Loire-Atlantique) at the end of 2022. Regarding this type of equipment, “the rate of equipment per million inhabitants will increase from 12.4 in 2020 to 14.5 per million inhabitants in 2023”, calculates the ARS.
