The scientific data analyst in the Emirates Mars Exploration Project, Dr. Maryam Youssef, dreams of being a role model in serving the UAE, through the project to reveal the “secrets of Mars”, through an open sharing of scientific data collected by the three scientific devices of the “Hope Probe”. », which provides an integrated picture of the atmosphere of the red planet throughout the day and year.

Dr. Maryam presents her project, through the "Dreamers Program", hosted by the UAE pavilion at "Expo 2020 Dubai", considering that the space sector contributes to advancing development and providing opportunities to inspire young minds, noting that the name "Probe", which was launched by In February 2021, the UAE will go to Mars, in the name of the "Probe of Hope", bearing a message that includes belief in the capabilities, dreams and spirit of Arab youth.

Dr. Maryam, who studied biomedical engineering at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, told "Emirates Today": "She is inspired by her ideas from listening to people's stories," explaining: "Inspirational stories give me strength and hope, and in particular I like to hear about how women break. stereotypes and challenging expectations.

She added about her orientation to space sciences in particular: "My studies in biomedical engineering did not prepare me for this job, except for the research skills acquired, and I should have learned space science and programming myself."

try to understand

About her project within the “Dreamers Program”, Dr. Mariam explained: “It is believed that Mars had an atmosphere similar to that of the Earth billions of years ago, and understanding what happened to it will help us enhance our awareness and understanding, so the idea of the project came that depends on the open sharing of scientific data that It was captured by the three scientific instruments of the (Hope Probe), which provides an integrated picture of the atmosphere of Mars throughout the day and year.

Through it, we seek to provide the unique scientific data collected by (the probe) over a whole Martian year to scientists, researchers and interested people every three months until the end of 2023.”

And she continued, "It is believed that billions of years ago, the atmosphere of Mars was similar to that of the Earth, and understanding Martian weather patterns and the loss of the atmosphere is a major scientific goal for all."

And she continued: “The (Hope Probe), affiliated with the Emirates Mars Exploration Mission, entered its orbit around Mars in February 2021, and collects unique data on atmospheric sciences, which are shared globally without ban, as scientists on a space mission usually keep their research data before sharing it with others. .

However, the UAE’s desire to expedite solutions to the world’s climate problems prompted immediate access to all.”

whole year

Dr. Maryam indicated that her project depends on the data provided by the “probe”, which will orbit the planet for two years (equivalent to one year for Mars), and is the first space mission to observe the Red Planet through its full annual cycle and geography, adding: “The data collected will help scientists On many matters, most notably the search for the reasons for leaving the atmosphere of oxygen and hydrogen on Mars to understand how it evolved over time, in addition to searching for a connection between the lower and upper atmosphere of Mars, and creating a comprehensive view of the climate of Mars over the day, season and year.”

Regarding the project’s next step, Dr. Mariam said: “We hope to obtain the quarterly releases of the scientific data of the mission until 2023, and to cooperate actively with scientists from all over the world.”

She advised young people: "A person who has a dream must be open to new opportunities, every new conversation is an opportunity to learn and grow, and he must be stubborn in believing in his goals and flexible in how to reach them."

Mariem yousif:

• “Inspirational stories give me strength and hope, and I especially love hearing about how women break stereotypes and challenge expectations.”

• «I advise young people to be open to new opportunities, for every new conversation is an opportunity to learn and grow, and he should be stubborn in believing in his goals and flexible in how to reach them».

In the Emirates, the impossible becomes possible

Dr. Maryam Youssef said: “We are very fortunate in the UAE, because we have a leadership that is not only visionary, but also believes in its people,” noting that the impossible becomes possible in our country, where “individuals unite and live in harmony for a better future for all.”

It is noteworthy that the UAE is the first Arab country and the fifth country in the world to reach Mars, and only the second country to successfully enter the orbit of Mars in its first attempt (India did this in 2014).

The space mission was designed and developed by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center in Dubai, in collaboration with Knowledge Partners.

80% of the team of scholars in the UAE were women.
