In a live video address from kyiv to thousands of people gathered outside the Swiss Parliament in Bern, Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday urged Swiss companies, including Nestlé, to halt their activities in Russia.
“Business works in Russia even when our children are dying and our cities are demolished” and when the inhabitants of Mariupol, a besieged Ukrainian city, are “without food, without water, without electricity and under the bombardments”, he castigated , recalling the slogan of the multinational, "Eat well, live well".
"We have greatly reduced our activities in Russia"
A Nestlé spokeswoman said Sunday that much of the company's business has slowed in Russia since the Kremlin-ordered invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
“We have greatly reduced our activities in Russia.
We have suspended all imports and exports there, except for vital products.
We have stopped all our investments there and have ceased all our advertising activities there,” she said.
“We are not making any profit from our remaining business in Russia.
The fact that we are supplying essential foodstuffs to the population, like other businesses in the food sector, does not mean that we simply continue our activities as before,” she added.
Nestlé says it is doing everything possible in Ukraine
On March 11, Nestlé announced the suspension of deliveries of certain products to Russia, including Nespresso coffee.
But some essentials like baby food and cereal continue to be delivered.
“We are doing everything possible in Ukraine and in neighboring countries to help mitigate this humanitarian disaster,” the spokeswoman said.
According to her, “our colleagues in Ukraine are doing everything they can to help the population with food donations.
We are one of the few companies in the food sector still active in Ukraine and we manage to distribute food, sometimes even in Kharkiv”, a large city in the North-West of Ukraine relentlessly bombarded by Russian forces.
