For the fifth year in a row, Finland tops the list in the World Happiness Report.

The report is published for the tenth time and ranks more than 150 countries based on how happy their populations feel.

Finland's points far exceeded the other countries in the top ten list.

In second place is Denmark, while Sweden ranks seventh just as in last year's report.

"Pandemic of benevolence"

The survey was conducted in the years 2019-2021, ie before the war in Ukraine but during the corona pandemic, which a special part of the report highlights the effects of.

During the pandemic years, there is an increase in "global goodwill" - an average of three measures of what is called prosocial behavior.

It is about volunteering, helping strangers and donations, which together were almost 25 percent higher than before the pandemic.

This means that the years with covid-19 in the report are referred to as a global "pandemic of benevolence".

At the same time, there is a global increase in negative emotions such as worry and sadness, which in 2020 was 8 percent higher compared to before the pandemic and in 2021 was 3 percent higher.

Least happy

At the bottom of the list of happiness are several countries marked by war and poverty.

At the very bottom is Afghanistan, followed by Lebanon, Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

Since the measurements started 15 years ago, the perceived happiness has increased most in Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania.

At the same time, it has fallen the most in Lebanon, Venezuela and Afghanistan.

The World Happiness Report is based on Gallup surveys where the populations were allowed to rank their own perceived happiness.
