As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continued, those who fled the war via Poland arrived in Japan and reunited with their families.

According to the UNHCR = United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the number of people evacuated from Ukraine after the military invasion by Russia has exceeded 3 million and is still increasing.

Under these circumstances, on the afternoon of the 19th, many Ukrainians fled the war at Narita Airport with direct flights from Poland, a neighboring country of Ukraine.

Of these, Rubow Marikoba (75), who had evacuated from the capital, Kyiv, was greeted by her daughter Natalya (42), who lives in Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture, and was delighted to hug each other with tears.

After leaving Kyiv, where the war continues, on the 11th of this month, Mr. Rubow traveled to Poland by train and on foot, and this time he will be with her daughter who lives in Japan.

Mr. Rubow said, "I am very happy to meet her daughter. I am grateful to Japan. It is enough to be alive."

Her daughter Natalya said, "I'm very happy, but I've never had such a sad reunion."

In addition, Hideki Furu (78), who lived in Zhytomyr, a city in northwestern Ukraine, has evacuated to Japan with four people, including his grandson's family.

"The Russian attack is still going on and there are many casualties. I had a very uneasy day. I am relieved to be able to come to Japan."
