  • EU Pedro Sánchez advocates intervening and energy: "We cannot wait another day. The situation is an emergency"

The

Government

has decided to wait until March 29 to approve measures against the sharp increase in the costs of electricity, gas, gasoline, supplies or agricultural inputs.

That delay has earned him the reproach of the main opposition parties, who are calling for a shock plan to take effect this month, in the midst of a revolt in the countryside and by part of the carriers.

And, above all, with hundreds of thousands of families on the verge of economic suffocation.

The members of the Government who have met with the PP and with Ciudadanos (Vox declined to negotiate measures) promised them energy reductions, but without detailing which ones, waiting for the

European Council

to set the tone for the next days 24 and 25. Given that lack of specificity, it is striking that both the PSOE and United We Can have so far renounced activating the Congress commission that was going to be in charge of agreeing on the action plan against the increase in the energy bill.

The commission was supposed to prepare its conclusions and proposals for legal improvements within six months, but seven months after announcing it, it is still blocked.

In fact, it has not even been established yet.

On September 3, the PSOE and United We Can announced the creation of this parliamentary forum to study electricity prices.

Since then, they haven't even tried to activate it.

They let the commission decline at the end of the session period, and then they have not started it despite the fact that the price of electricity and fuel remains at levels that multiply the usual market figures.

Electricity cost 140 euros when announcing the commission and now it is close to 300

When the PSOE and United We Can presented this proposal, the price of electricity was below 140 euros per megawatt hour.

Yesterday it reached 290 euros, and on March 8 it reached 544 euros/Mwh.

Spain and Portugal are now going to propose decoupling the gas from the rest of the bill, and a cap of 180 euros.

This is what both governments will try to do in the European Council.

This maximum price was a reference that existed in the Spanish and Portuguese regulations until in 2019 a European directive prohibited maintaining limits on the offers of electricity companies in the wholesale market.

The parliamentary commission that had to act to prevent these increases in Spain was going to be non-permanent and each party had to propose two members so that among all the parliamentary groups they could agree on measures to reduce the rise in prices derived from the volatility of the cost of gas, mainly in wholesale markets.

And develop a plan to lower the electricity bill to sustainable levels and thus curb the "negative and serious consequences on a very significant part of the population and the economic fabric."

The goal was to find solutions in six months, but they have gone blank

In addition, this commission was going to serve to prepare the legal work on the possible modification of the marginal system of formation of electricity prices and to put on the table additional proposals that would accelerate the ecological transition, giving greater weight to the generation of energies. renewable.

The proposal was led by United We Can, after promoting several partners of the coalition government -Más País-Equo, Compromís and Nueva Canarias- an investigation commission on the rise in prices and clarify possible market manipulations.

Sources from

the Socialist Parliamentary Group

assure that "the commission was not activated because the measures were urgent, rather than carrying out studies."

"In fact, the Government of Spain is the one who pioneered the need to decouple gas from the price of electricity a year ago, which is what leads us to have more expensive electricity and higher inflation," they add, "and it is now when the Commission is seeing that the proposal promoted by the Government of Spain is necessary".
