A man armed with an ax and a spray can attacked worshipers at a mosque in a suburb of Toronto on Saturday, and the attack - which left no casualties - was condemned "strongly" by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

And Anadolu Agency quoted the imam of the mosque, Ibrahim Hindi, that the worshipers heard a man’s noise when he sprayed pepper spray over them during dawn prayers, adding that the worshipers turned around and saw that he was carrying an ax in his hand, and quickly overpowered him, and threw him to the ground, before the police came to arrest him.

The local police said - in a statement - that the 24-year-old man, who was arrested, entered the mosque in the city of Mississauga, Ontario (eastern Canada), spraying the worshipers with incendiary spray before they controlled it.

She explained that worshipers sustained minor injuries from the incendiary spray designed to repel bear attacks, and the police assessed that the attack was an "individual act", noting at the same time that it could be an "anti-Islam act."

The Canadian Prime Minister condemned - via Twitter - the "extremely disturbing" attack, and said, "I strongly condemn this violence that has no place in Canada," praising the "courage" of those in the mosque.

Several politicians - including the mayor of Toronto and the premier of the province - also condemned the attack on a place of worship.
