Vilhelmina can receive 900 refugees in the emergency phase - but only when the winter season is over.

That is when the opportunity for housing exists.

- 900 is about how many beds we can offer in the emergency phase, we have inventoried all the spaces available, says Annika Andersson, chair of the municipal board.

During the previous wave of refugees in 2015-2016, Vilhelmina was hit hard when the Swedish Migration Board terminated all contracts in one month.

The municipality suffered a financial blow when the need for places suddenly disappeared while premises and staff continued to cost money.

Forced to borrow money

It was so bad that Vilhelmina was forced to borrow money for the operation to pay the staff's salaries.

After a couple of tough years with cuts, Vilhelmina came on a green twig again.

- It should not be repeated this time.

We have learned quite a lot and will handle this in a completely different way.

We will have a special account separate from all other activities.

What happened in 2015-2016 should not be repeated, says Karl-Johan Ottosson.
