An M-led government will submit a NATO application if there is a parliamentary majority for it after the election, writes party leader Ulf Kristersson on DN Debatt.

He believes that the Social Democrats no longer have a veto on the issue.

A majority requires the Sweden Democrats to join the Moderates and the other parties that are in favor of NATO membership: the Christian Democrats, the Liberals and the Center Party.

SD has opened to investigate a Swedish NATO application, but has not yet given a final decision.

Despite the fact that Kristersson has now placed Sweden's defense policy future in the hands of the Sweden Democrats, his proposal does not seem to be rooted in SD.

Decisive influence

SD's defense policy spokesman Per Söderlund points out that the party's influence over the issue will be decisive.

- The moderates can not vouch for what a government that has not yet received the forms should do or not.

As long as the Sweden Democrats are a necessary part of a government base, our influence on the issue will be decisive, says Per Söderlund in a written comment.

Finnish application a prerequisite

Kristersson writes in the debate article that the NATO application should take place "as soon as at all possible" and that it should be done together with Finland.

Söderlund agrees that a Finnish application is a prerequisite for Sweden to join NATO.

- Our starting point is that a membership will only be actualized in the near future if it appears necessary for Sweden's security, says Söderlund.

Such an assessment will also need to be made with a broad political consensus, according to Per Söderlund.

The Social Democrats, the Green Party and the Left Party are opposed to membership.

SVT is looking for other parliamentary parties for a comment.
