Ukraine's Defense Ministry says Russian forces have "destroyed 90 percent of Mariupol".
New drone images filmed on Friday confirm that large parts of the city are in ruins.
"There is no electricity, gas or heat in the city," the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense wrote on Facebook.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj believes that Russian shelling prevents the establishment of effective humanitarian corridors from Mariupol.
