A 3-year-old child was fatally mowed down by a 4X4 on Wednesday late afternoon in Quet-en-Beaumont (Isère).

He was playing on a private road, in front of his house, when the vehicle backed up on him, reports France 3 Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

The driver is a worker who was working on a nearby construction site.

He would not have seen the little boy during his maneuver.

Driver hospitalized while in police custody

The child was taken home, where his parents and four siblings were.

A heart massage was given to him while waiting for help.

Despite the important device deployed on the spot, the boy could not be resuscitated.

, the 55-year-old driver was briefly taken into police custody.

In shock, he had to be transferred to a hospital in Grenoble on Thursday.

His blood alcohol test was negative.
