Could this be a turning point for Taliban power on the international scene?

On Thursday March 17, the UN Security Council approved a resolution establishing a formal and lasting relationship with the Taliban.

In power in Afghanistan since August 2021, they are still seeking recognition on the international scene.

"Peace and Stability"

The resolution, which does not use the word "Taliban", details the new mandate of the UN political mission in Afghanistan (Manua) for one year.

It was approved by fourteen votes in favour, with only Russia abstaining.

The resolution includes several aspects of cooperation, on the humanitarian level, the political level and the defense of human rights, including those of women, children and journalists.

"This new Manua mandate is crucial not only to respond to the immediate humanitarian and economic crisis, but also to achieve our overarching goal of peace and stability in Afghanistan," the Norwegian ambassador told AFP after the vote. at the UN, Mona Juul, whose country drafted the resolution.

"The Council sends a clear message with this new mandate: Manua has a crucial role to play in promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan and in supporting the Afghan people as they face challenges and unprecedented uncertainty," she added.
