The hospital in the besieged city of Mariupol is one of the few that can still receive the injured.

Several other hospitals have been bombed by Russian forces.

The building, which was previously a general hospital, now functions as an emergency room, maternity ward and mortuary.

In one of the rooms there are babies who have been evacuated from the maternity ward.

To protect them from broken glass, they are placed under blankets.

- Everything just fell over us and we carried the children here, says a nurse.

Outside the hospital and in the basement, which was previously used as a food warehouse, the dead bodies are collected.

- All other hospitals were bombed and no one could pick them up.

There is no rescue service, says doctor Valeriy Drengar.

Massive damage in the city

Up to 90 percent of the city of Mariupol has been destroyed or damaged, Serhiy Orlov, deputy mayor of the city, told Forbes Ukraine on Wednesday.

According to Orlov, more than 2,300 people died in the city by March 13.

The figures are unconfirmed, but the mayor states that the number today is much higher.

- We bury them, most of them in mass graves, he says.

On Tuesday, 28,000 people managed to get out of the city, which has about 400,000 inhabitants, through humanitarian corridors, reports AP.
