Hundreds of children of "Ukrainian surrogate mothers" face an unknown fate

Yesterday, Wednesday, a senior European Union official called for the evacuation of children of surrogate mothers from Ukraine, after the fathers of these children could not reach the Ukrainian territory to receive them in light of the war.

The European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, expressed concern about these children of surrogate mothers who have been placed in orphanages.

She revealed to the European Parliament that parents from EU countries and the United States had a problem getting their children out of Ukraine even in the pre-war period due to the Covid-related closure.

"During the pandemic, many of these newborns were not picked up, so they are stuck and are now being cared for in orphanages," Johansson said.

But she pointed out that some of these orphanages were evacuated during the war, and the fate and whereabouts of the children are currently unknown.

The commissioner added that "children of surrogate mothers at the present time cannot be received and, to some extent, have entered a state of limbo."

"From my point of view, there is an urgent need to evacuate these children," she said.

Ukraine is one of the rare countries in the world that allows surrogacy and allows this act as a commercial practice.

It is estimated that up to 3,000 babies are born each year in Ukraine to surrogate mothers for clients from countries such as China, the United States and the European Union.

The Covid epidemic has highlighted this practice, which has flourished in Ukraine.

A large clinic in Kyiv had broadcast a video clip of dozens of babies born to surrogate mothers who were unable to come to receive them due to the closure of the borders.
