Cairo -

The Egyptian authorities decided to use the capabilities of the army and police to provide food commodities at discounted prices through the many outlets they own across the republic, to face the repercussions of the Russian war in Ukraine and the resulting disruption of supply and supply chains, and the sharp rise in shipping costs and global prices for goods and services. As well as the growing anger of citizens over the high prices, especially with the advent of the holy month of Ramadan.

According to government media, the General Command of the Armed Forces issued orders to the National Service Projects Organization and the General Services Organization to provide basic food commodities through fixed and mobile outlets at reduced prices to relieve the burdens on citizens during the month of Ramadan.

According to the statement issued by the armed forces, its Logistics Authority has mobilized and equipped one million food rations to be offered at a discount rate of up to 60% in the governorates of the field armies and military areas, in a measure that will reduce the living burdens of citizens on the occasion of the advent of the month of Ramadan.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior began offering food commodities for a month at discounts of up to 60% through about a thousand branches and outlets, as part of the launch of the activities of the 22nd phase of the "We are All One" initiative, and it will continue until the middle of next month, according to what was published by local media.

The Ministry of the Interior says that the initiative is working to provide all family necessities, including food and non-food commodities, with high quality and prices reduced from their counterparts in the markets by between 25 and 60%, in coordination with the General Administration of Supply and Trade Police and suppliers from the owners of commercial companies specialized in those areas to participate in the initiative. .

Facing the price tag or anger?

Although this step is aimed primarily at confronting the high prices of food commodities and providing them and lifting the burdens on the citizens, it also comes within the state’s measures to contain the growing anger of the Egyptian street over the sharp rise in prices, especially the prices of grains, oils, meat and unsubsidized bread, whose price has increased by 50% .

The tone of citizens' complaints rose significantly on social media about the high prices that hit all food commodities, and they complained of want, declining purchasing abilities, and lack of money for some to face the daily burdens caused by the high prices of commodities globally, their volatility, and the lack of supplies.

Activists circulated video clips of citizens - most of whom are women - in which they expressed their anger at the high prices and their inability to provide basic commodities, despite the government's assurances that it would make every effort to control food prices and provide them at the outlets of various state agencies, such as the armed forces, the interior and the Ministry of Supply.

I have never seen the country in this condition.

Don't sit around and talk about prices while you get paid in the millions

Crisis and security campaigns committee

A few days ago, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly chaired the first meeting of the committee to confront the impact of the current global crisis on strategic goods, in the presence of a large number of ministers, including the Minister of Interior and the Director of the National Service Projects Organization for the Armed Forces, provided that the meeting will be held on a weekly basis throughout the crisis’s continuation, allowing an assessment of developments first hand and take the necessary measures in light of the developments.

The armed forces own 202 fixed outlets and 1,187 mobile outlets, and the Ministry of Interior contributes 740 fixed outlets and 190 mobile outlets as part of the state's efforts to provide citizens' requirements for goods.

In parallel, the Ministry of Interior says that it is launching extensive oversight security campaigns under the pretext of following up on the availability of food commodities in the local market, and these efforts resulted during the period from 9 to 12 March this year, 5,476 cases were released, including 1,216 violations related to bakeries and wheat, and the confiscation of thousands of tons of food. Food items and commodities and display them at state outlets.

Finance Minister Mohamed Maait says that the Russian-Ukrainian crisis has doubled - according to an International Monetary Fund report - the inflationary pressures arising from the disruption of supply and supply chains and the sharp rise in shipping costs, and global prices for goods and services, calling during press statements to cultivate and manufacture all needs so that the country does not import inflation. (High rise) from the outside, he said.

International Warnings

In turn, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said that global food and feed prices could rise by 8-20% as a result of the war on Ukraine, which would lead to a jump in the number of malnourished people around the world.

The organization warned that about 9.6% of the population in Egypt is at risk of not being able to provide healthy food if their purchasing power declines by a third, especially on the poorest classes in the world who spend most of their income on food, with the disruptions in food supply in the global market.

And Fitch Ratings expected that the Central Bank of Egypt would raise interest rates to face the repercussions of the global crisis, but it clarified that raising the interest rate in parallel with food price inflation may complicate Egypt's efforts to reduce the state's public budget deficit.

The total annual inflation rate in Egypt rose last February for the third month in a row, to record 10%, compared to 8% in January, the highest rise since mid-2019, according to a statement by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.

When you see prices in Egypt

, you feel that the European Union imposed economic sanctions on Egypt, not on Russia.

I want to understand that this price increase is not for Egypt, but Egypt is the least of the countries in high prices compared to other countries, but what do we say?

Infrastructure projects in #Egypt raise the hats for it from the size of #electrical energy projects and even solutions to the problems of traffic jams, from the construction of #bridges and the construction of

#roads, it remains for the state to find solutions to the problem of #high_price, which is a challenge and, God willing, it is the challenge. #Aqbalna_Bsisi
