- It is punishable by imprisonment.

We can not convey information about the military, whether it is about health, life or place of service, says the human rights defender "Natalya".

Three weeks ago, around 200,000 Russian soldiers stationed around Ukraine's borders began to enter the country.

- We do not know what was said to them.

They were sent to Ukraine and we have no contact with them, says "Natalya".

- About the Russian soldiers in Ukraine, we only know what the Ukrainians are saying, she continues.

"Come Back From Ukraine Alive"

Since the start of the war, Ukraine's Interior Ministry has operated the "Come Back From Ukraine Alive" telephone line.

Russians can call there to get information about Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

Audio recordings that CNN has read and published show how little information is available in Russia, and how little the Russian soldiers have been told about what their operation would be about, or where they would be sent.

The telephone line has so far received thousands of calls from worried relatives.

Some have called from places as remote as Vladivostok, on Russia's eastern border.

Conscripted combat in Ukraine

Recently, the Russian Ministry of Defense acknowledged that conscripts participated in the fighting in Ukraine, something that is contrary to Russian law.

A day earlier, on International Women's Day, President Vladimir Putin had assured Russian mothers that such a thing did not occur in Ukraine.

- It is a war, an aggression and a war of conquest that is being fought in violation of the Geneva Convention.

Thousands of dead soldiers

The US Pentagon estimates that 2,000-4,000 Ukrainian soldiers and at least 7,000 Russian soldiers have died in the war so far.

- The whole world stood and slept.

In 2014, we said that Russia must be stopped.

It was before the Donbas and after the Crimea.

We just swallowed what was happening and thought it was not that dangerous.

The result was this war.
