• The municipal council of Rennes adopted Monday evening the development program for the quays of the Vilaine.

  • By 2027, the river will be uncovered with the demolition of the Vilaine car park.

  • Place de la République and placette Joffre will also be redeveloped.

Before being able to stroll along the banks of the Vilaine in the city center of Rennes, you will still have to wait.

But the project to reclaim the river desired by the municipality is becoming clearer.

We already knew that the removal of the Vilaine car park, built in the 1960s above the river, had been implemented despite the opposition of certain residents and traders.

But what to do with this space freed from cars?

To this question, the majority of Nathalie Appéré opted, after consulting a citizen jury, for the demolition of the slab in order to discover the Vilaine and make it a place for walking.

“We are going to close the page on the all-car era which was popular in the 1960s and 1970s”, underlined Marc Hervé, first deputy for town planning, during the vote on the project on January 17 at the municipal council.

Two months later, the subject of the rediscovery of the Vilaine was again invited into the debates on Monday evening with the adoption during the council of the program for the development of the quays.

Start of works in 2024, delivery in 2027

Once the car park is demolished, a pedestrian path will be created along the northern quays to allow walks along the water's edge and the vegetated banks.

Pontoons, floating or not, will also be installed and bleachers fitted out on the southern part in order to offer "spaces for breaks and relaxation", specifies the elected official.

Finally, a footbridge, like the one giving access to Place Saint-Germain, will overlook the water in the extension of rue Comté de Lanjuinais.

Estimated at 17 million euros, the quays of the Vilaine project should start in the second half of 2024 for delivery scheduled for 2027. For the opposition group Révéler Rennes (LREM), this is a "project structure that will permanently change the appearance of the city centre”.

But Carole Gandon nevertheless regrets that the development does not go “as far as the Pasteur bridge, from the Palais Saint-Georges to the area around the Museum of Fine Arts, the general appearance of which leaves something to be desired”.

The elected official is also concerned "about the quality of the water, the nuisances linked to the uses around the Vilaine and the issue of securing the development".

A facelift for Place de la République

In full transformation of its city center into a “peaceful zone”, the municipality will also take advantage of this rediscovery of the Vilaine to modify the aspect of the neighboring Place de la République.

Soon freed from some of the buses that overload it every day, the square should be enhanced with the creation of a bright scenography and more space for plants.

Public spaces should be reconfigured there in order to host events and make this square in the Breton capital "a place of destination rather than a place of passage".

Just next door, the small Place Joffre, popular with starlings, will also be redeveloped.

It was originally intended to accommodate the extension of the Palais du Commerce which will be transformed into a large shopping center on the horizon.

But faced with the opposition of certain associations, the city and the Frey group reviewed their copy in September, abandoning the idea of this extension on the plot.

With the development of these two places, the overall cost of the operation adopted Monday evening at the municipal council amounts to just over 26 million euros.
