"Today, you have 15,000 people who have arrived from Ukraine and who are in France, who are mainly women and children, since most of the men have remained in Ukraine to fight", announced Marlène Schiappa at the microphone of Sonia Mabrouk.

The bombardments in Ukraine continue, they intensified again this night in kyiv.

The Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Interior, in charge of Citizenship, Marlène Schiappa was the guest of the morning of Europe 1. She is in particular in charge of the fate of Ukrainian refugees.

France has announced that it could accommodate up to 100,000 Ukrainians.

"Today, you have 15,000 people who have arrived from Ukraine and who are in France, who are mainly women and children, since most of the men have remained in Ukraine to fight", announced Marlène Schiappa at the microphone of Sonia Mabrouk.

Creation of the European Temporary Protection Status

The Minister also explained the difference between refugees and displaced persons: first of all, the latter “do not have refugee status because obtaining refugee status takes several months”.

Then, she continued, "when you are a refugee, you cannot go back to your country of origin because you are considered to be at risk there".

This is the reason why the French government pushed for the creation of a "European temporary protection status", a great first: "With Prime Minister Jean Castex, we went to reception points for these displaced persons to give them precisely these first statutes", continued Marlène Schiappa.

This specific status "will allow the outcome [of the conflict, editor's note] to return to Ukraine for those who wish".

And the minister underlined it on Europe 1: many displaced people "say that they want to return to rebuild their country".
